What does Tonic cost?

Tonic is free for as long as you like: lock two apps and earn one way, with limits, schedules and saved places included. Tonic Unlimited lifts the limits on apps and ways to earn, for $39.99 a year or $9.99 a month, with the first 7 days free.

Free locks two apps, with one way to earn. Unlimited lifts both caps.

How many apps can I lock?
Two, across everything you set up.
How many ways to earn?
One, your choice: minutes in one productive app like Kindle or Duolingo, or steps, a workout, meditation or daylight from Apple Health.
What's missing?
Only more apps and more ways to earn.
When does it end?
It doesn't.

Tonic Unlimited

7 days free

$39.99 a year or $9.99 a month

The year works out to about $3.33 a month. If the trial is set to renew, Tonic reminds you 2 days before it does.

How many apps can I lock?
Up to 50 apps at once, the most iOS lets a screen time app lock.
How many ways to earn?
Several. Put reading and a walk on one rule: either one opens the apps, or you require both. Or put a different habit in front of each app.
What's missing?
Nothing. Everything on free is here too.
When does it end?
When you cancel, at the end of the period you paid for. Tonic then keeps your most-used setup running on free.

Prices in US dollars; the App Store in other countries shows its local price. Unlimited is billed through Apple.

Two apps and one habit fit on free.

Lock Instagram and TikTok until you've read 20 minutes in Kindle. That uses your two free apps and your one way to earn.

Kindle
Read 20 min in Kindle
of whatever you're reading
13 of 20 min
then they open: Instagram TikTok

Still fits on free

  • No habit at all, if you'd rather: a plain limit on your two apps, like 30 minutes a day or 5 visits.
  • Any one habit: 6,000 steps, a workout saved from Strava, a sit in Headspace, or those 20 minutes in Kindle.
  • Make the lock a strict wall, or a pause that grows with each visit.
  • Limit the same apps after you've earned them: an hour for the rest of the day, or 10 visits.
  • Run the rule only at work, or weekdays 9 to 5. Your reading still counts at home.
  • Track a second habit without locking anything. It doesn't use your one way to earn.

Needs Unlimited

  • A third locked app. Reddit on top of Instagram and TikTok.
  • A limit on another app. 45 minutes a day of YouTube would be your third.
  • A second way to earn. Say, reading or a walk for the same apps. Or reading for Instagram and a walk for TikTok. Or Apple Books on top of Kindle.

At any of those, you see the upgrade screen.

Quick answers

Does the free plan actually lock apps, or is it only a trial?

It locks them for real: two locked apps and one way to earn, with no end date. The 7-day trial belongs to Unlimited and starts only when you choose it.

Does the free plan have ads, or do you sell my data?

No ads on either plan, and Tonic doesn't sell your data or track you across other apps or websites. Tonic does send usage and diagnostic data tied to a random device ID, including a copy of the Apple Health readings it uses, to fix bugs and improve the app.

What happens when the trial ends, or if I stop paying?

When the 7 days are up, Apple charges the price you picked, unless you cancel first. Tonic reminds you 2 days before. If Unlimited ends without renewing, Tonic keeps your most-used setup running on the free plan and pauses the rest; nothing is deleted, and you choose what stays on.

What happens if I add a third app on the free plan?

You see the upgrade screen. Say no and the two you had keep running as they were: Tonic never quietly removes an app you picked.

How do I cancel, and can I get a refund?

Cancel in iPhone Settings: your name, Subscriptions, Tonic. You keep Unlimited to the end of the period you paid for. Refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

I paid, but Tonic still says Free. What do I do?

Tap Restore Purchases at the bottom of Tonic's Settings, on the same Apple ID you bought with. That fixes it almost every time. If it still says Free, email [email protected].
